Flint, MI — January 25, 2025 — Gloria Coles Flint Public Library has announced that it will not host the United Way’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program due to changes at the University of Michigan-Flint (UM-Flint), the program provider. These changes are due to the unavailability of the faculty and student volunteers who have traditionally provided this essential service at the library.
For many years, UM-Flint has partnered with Gloria Coles Flint Public Library to offer free tax preparation assistance through the VITA program. This collaboration has allowed low-to-moderate income (incomes of $67,000 or lower) residents to file their taxes for free.
The library recognizes the significant role that VITA plays in supporting the local community and regrets that the service will not be available at the library.
“We deeply appreciate the many years of partnership with the University of Michigan-Flint and the invaluable volunteer service they have provided through the VITA program,” said Taliah Abdullah, executive director of Gloria Coles Flint Public Library.
Abdullah added: “We will assist our community members to explore available resources for free tax preparation assistance.”
Local residents are encouraged to reach out to free tax assistance providers in the area, including the IRS, community organizations and the United Way
