GISD Announces Process and Schedule to Fill Beecher Community School District Board of Education Vacancy

FLINT – The Genesee Intermediate School District (GISD) will begin accepting applications from citizens who are interested in filling a vacant seat on the Board of Education for the Beecher Community School District.

In a letter dated January 9, 2025, Beecher Community School District Board of Education President Marvin Smoot requested that the GISD Board of Education appoint a qualified and registered elector residing within the boundaries of the Beecher Community School District to fill a vacancy resulting from the resignation of a board member on December 3, 2024. Beecher Community School District determined that 30 days have passed since the vacancy first existed, resulting in the request for the GISD Board of Education to appoint a new board member pursuant to Michigan Election Law (MCL 168.311(1)). The GISD Board of Education has developed a fair and transparent process to fill the vacancy as requested, which will include an opportunity for qualified applicants to be interviewed by the GISD Board of Education.

An applicant must be a registered voter who lives within the boundaries of the Beecher Community School District. To be considered for appointment, applicants must submit a one-page letter of application and a one-page resume to the GISD Superintendent’s Office, and be received no later than 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 23, 2025.

All interviews and meetings are open to the public and will be held in the Legacy Auditorium of the Erwin L. Davis Education Center, 2413 West Maple Avenue, Flint, Michigan. Interviews are scheduled for Tuesday, January 28, 2025 beginning at 4:00 pm. The GISD Board of Education will select and appoint the new board member immediately after all interviews are completed.

The names of the candidates and a complete schedule of interviews and meetings will be posted after applications have been submitted. Pursuant to the Revised School Code, the new board member will serve the remainder of the term of the vacancy which is December 31, 2026.
