An estimated 176 people are dying per day in the United States from overdose. Many are dying from the negative effects from alcoholism and other addictions. The growing opioid/addiction crisis is impacting families in communities across Genesee County.
The musicians will play acoustic sets ranging from blues to alternative rock. This year’s arts and music show is dedicated to Ashley Peacock who was tragically lost to suicide almost two years ago. Roland and Tara Moreno-Wallen, founding director, were friends of Peacock.
“Arts & Music is a lovely way to come together and heal,” said Tara Moreno-Wallen. “We need to get creative if we are going to solve this growing problem of addiction and overdose. The only way we can really get to the root of the problem is by coming together. One of the biggest hurdles to this epidemic is the stigma. We need to learn how to be vulnerable and talk about our issues without judgment or fear.  There this deep shame connected to addiction. This doesn’t have to be the way. Science is proving that addiction is a health issue and not a moral failing. No one wakes up one day wishing to destroy their families, lose their job and their life savings, lose their beauty. As a person in long-term recovery, I certainly didn’t think I would one day grow up to be a person with an addiction problem.”
In addition to the music, Moreno-Wallen will have a 12 poster photography exhibit on display of women who are in recovery and vocal about their journey. Before stepping into the role of director, Moreno-Wallen was an accomplished photographer.
The event is free. Registration is suggested and can be done at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/flint-recovery-arts-music-show-2022-tickets-246731048207.
For the past five years, Founder and Executive Director Tara Moreno-Wallen and her team have provided annual awareness events like the Flint Recovery Arts & Music Show to eradicate the stigma surrounding addiction and to bring together the community, local businesses, treatment providers and other health services.
