Cara Drew is a 19-years-old  senior attending Michigan State University,  studying  education-and proud Flintstone.

This year the Michigan State Unviersity (MSU)  Black Student Alliance (BSA)  hosted its annual Miss Black MSU pageant. The pageant promotes Black excellence and is a long-standing tradition. Drew was fortunate to be crowned the winner of the competition against  five other contestants.

Each contestant took part in  a live interview, q & a session, talent section and event presentation.

“I’ve always wanted to be in a pageant and saw this as opportunity  to shine light of Black community,” Drew said.

She has been preparing for four months straight along with being a leader on campus as an intercultural advisory . Drew volunteers with various community organizations on campus, like Overarching Loves as a co-founder. The mission of Overarching Loves is to provide food and personal items to those in need.

But the work doesn’t stop there; she also serves on E-board for CurlFriends, another student organization  that focuses on the acceptance of natural hair . When she’s not serving, she enjoys hanging out with friends and likes binge watching Netflix shows.

Drew reflects on her childhood education, which  played a significant role in who she is now.

“In fifth grade, I will never forget learning about the  truth of  Black history, and I take pride in being a product of Flint Community Schools in my early years,” she said.

Serving with her new position as Miss Black MSU, she plans to move forward her new  service project with the BSU; Project Purpose, which will allow high school students from local Lansing schools a  chance to visit Michigan State campus and provide college courses.

“I’m super excited and grateful to be named Miss Black MSU, and I’m looking forward to supporting the Lansing community”.

Drew also gives thanks to her parents Bernard Drew and Christel Drew and her loving church family at West Court Street Church of God. She has  a  message to all the little girls In Flint

“Being from Flint, I represent the city in the best way possible. It’s time to shift the narrative away from the crime and the  water crisis and show people the heart of the city the grind that we have built inside us.”
