The Flint Genesee Job Corps Center services young adults , ages 16-24, offering career technical training, educational classes, residential living, wellness, daily meals, recreation and so much more. Despite the COVID pandemic, students at the Flint Genesee Job Corps Center are doing great things – completing their skill trade with various credentials, obtaining their high school diploma or GED and reaching their career goals of getting great jobs!  Due to COVID regulations, students residing in the dorms normally do not leave the center, but have been very creative during their studies.  One of the activities is the Writers Club, in which students were asked to write their thoughts about the pandemic during their training period.  Below are poems written by  carpentry student, Julian Seaton  and another by  homeland security student, Jerimah King.

“We ae very proud of our students and their achievements during this challenging time,” said Daniel Sheppard, center director. “They have proven to be steadfast and focused on their goals, having no limitations  to  their future accomplishments.  We look forward to working with new students as well.”

Life In A Pandemic

Written by Julian Seaton

 Staying at home day by day,

Watching my plans wither away,

Always wear a mask, don’t ever forget,

That one mistake can cost you regret.

Social distancing is the way to go,

It’ll always keep you safe just so you know.

Being unemployed really does suck,

So now you’re sitting at home like a little duck.

At least it’s not all bad, you have your friends,

It lets you know how much they mean to you, right to the very end.

Working from home gives you space,

Away from co-workers that had no grace.

Wash your hands, watch your sneeze,

You’re trying to prevent this deadly disease.

Life is passing by, and it’s really not fair,

No one asked for this disease, it causes despair.

Life in a pandemic is really tough,

But we’ll get through it, because we’ve all had enough.

Vaccines are here, we have some hope,

It makes it easier on us, which is really dope.

Making progress is the way to go,

All you have to do is go with the flow.

That was my life during Covid, it wasn’t the best,

But I am a fighter and a warrior, I say it with my chest!

Covid 2021

Written by Jerimah King

This year has been marked with reflection and change;

some days feel good and others feel strange.

We’ve learned to work differently;

and love more unconditionally.

We try to tune out the stress;

but sometimes life still feels like a mess.

We find ways to turn negatives into good;

and learn new skills that we thought we never could.

We find ways to travel to less congested places;

and we meet our friends with covered faces.

Hopefully this year has been filled with opportunity;

and we’ve tried to exercise and strengthen our immunity.
