FIA launches sensory friendly initiative

As part of a broad initiative to welcome ALL, the Flint Institute of Arts recently announced the availability of sensory supportive materials and designated quiet spaces to its visitors beginning in September 2023!
This new effort will include sensory bags for children and adults with supportive tools available to check out at the FIA’s front desk free of charge, along with a map of their dedicated quiet and calming spaces.
“The FIA’s mission is to advance the understanding and appreciation of the arts for all,”  said FIA Executive Director Tracee Glab.
“The addition of this type of progressive programming is another step forward in that charge to make our institution a more welcoming place in the spirit of inclusion and accessibility for everyone,” Glab added.
Sensory bags will include sunglasses, noise canceling headphones, fidgets, visual supports and social stories. Weighted lap pads will also be available to any interested visitors.
Designated quiet zones will also be accessible, allowing visitors to decompress and experience the museum at their own pace.
FIA Education Director Matthew Osmon remarks: “The FIA Education Department is committed to growing with and adapting to the needs of our community. Many people face barriers to participation in community settings that may require additional adaptations for meaningful experiences. We believe this sensory support is vital to our institution and look forward to expanding this program and others with the aim of access and inclusion for our entire community.”
To help prepare for their visit, families can go to flintarts.org to view the FIA’s sensory friendly pre-visit resources which include social stories, and a useful museum map with sound and light sensitivity indicators.
Leading this commitment is the FIA’s early childhood education and accessibility specialist, Libby Sheldon. For more information, Sheldon can be reached at lsheldon@flintarts.org.
Genesee County residents receive free museum admission every day at the Flint Institute of Arts thanks to the Genesee County Arts Education and Cultural Enrichment Millage.
