Eighth Annual MCC/Haiti Benefit Concert

The Mott Community College (MCC) Music Department will host the Eighth Annual MCC/Haiti Benefit Concert and Silent Auction Sunday, March 31, at the Events Center on the main campus in Flint. The concert will feature the MCC Concert Band (including alumni), Concert Choir and Chamber Singers performing a performing many folk-type works from various geographic locations and cultures, including Haiti, the southern United States, Ireland, Czechoslovakia, and works by Ticheli, Grainger, Dvorak, McMichael, and others.

Cost for the concert is $5 at the door. Doors open at 2:30 p.m. for the silent auction and the concert will begin at 3 p.m. Bidding for silent auction items will take place before the concert, during intermission, and following the concert. Cash and checks are accepted.

“This concert is a long-term commitment by our faculty and students to provide music education to students in Haiti who are rebuilding in the wake of the earthquake that devastated the country in 2010,” said Mary Procopio, Director of Instrument Studies in the Fine Arts and Social Sciences Division, at MCC.

Proceeds from the concert go toward the purchase of instruments, music and supplies for music students in Haiti, and providing financial assistance to MCC students traveling to Haiti in the summer to volunteer their time and talents to teach at the Ecole de Musique Sainte Trinite summer music camp.  Additionally, proceeds also provide scholarship assistance to Haitian students in need of financial assistance to attend the music school and summer music camp.

The MCC Music Department chose to support music students in Haiti, and specifically the Ecole de Musique Sainte Trinite, following an earthquake in that country in 2010 that destroyed the school.  The project also enables MCC Music students and students involved in the Honors College to take part in a service learning project that is international in scope.
