Can Help New Gardeners Get Started

Have you been thinking about starting a vegetable garden but don’t know where to begin?

edible flint Garden Starters Kits have everything you need to plant a vegetable garden as big as 30 feet by 50 feet!  Each kit comes with 17 kinds of organic vegetable seeds and 9 types of transplants – $70 worth of plant material all for just $15.  Kits also include a helpful planting guide and sample garden designs.  The kits are available to Genesee County residents.  A maximum of two kits may be ordered per garden and/or group, while supplies last. The 2015 kit application also offers 40 pound bags of compost for $5 per bag. The pre-purchased kits and 40 pound bags of compost will be picked up Wednesday, May 13, 2015 at the Community Tool Shed at the Neighborhood Engagement Hub (formerly Salem Housing Community Development Corporation) 3216 M.L.             edible flint Garden Starter Services are available for  food gardens located within the City of Flint to help grow a vegetable garden as big as 30 feet by 50 feet (maximum size 1,500 sq. ft.). Services available include soil testing for first time gardens serviced by Garden Starters for $5/garden, and soil testing for mature gardens 3 years and older for $20/per garden; compost & delivery for $15/garden while supplies last; and soil tilling for $15/first time garden to Garden Starters, up to a maximum of 2 gardens per applicant (total 3,000sq.ft).  To order, download the 2015 Garden Starters Service order form.

            The edible flint Garden Starters Kits and Services are pre-purchased and can be paid with cash, check or money order, and are payable with completed application.  The deadline for both applications is Wednesday, April 15, 2015. The 2015 Garden Starters kits and services applications are available at the MSU Extension Office, 605 N. Saginaw St, Suite 1A, Flint, 48502 or online at www.edibleflint.org for printing and mailing to MSUE. It’s a great value for a season of home-grown food!

edible flint is a network formed in July 2009 whose members are local residents, public and private organizations and institutions. Its mission is to help Flint residents grow and have access to healthy food, and to reconnect to the land and to each other.

            The edible flint Garden Starter Program is part of edible flint’s strategy to increase Flint’s capacity to produce healthy food. Through the sharing of knowledge and by providing training, technical assistance and garden resources, edible flint is helping Flint residents grow food gardens in the city.
