Diabetes Prevention Program Starting in the Flint Area in November

Diabetes Prevention Program Starting in the Flint Area in November
DPP can reduce the risk, delay the onset or even prevent diabetes

While many are familiar with type 2 diabetes, fewer are aware of prediabetes, a serious health condition affecting over 2.6 million Michiganders (more than 1 in 3) that often leads to type 2 diabetes. To help curb this epidemic, the Diabetes Prevention Center, a division of the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan, will hold the following Diabetes Prevention Program workshop:

Refuge Temple Church of Flint, 4400 W. Carpenter Rd., Flint, MI 48504

Information session: Thursday, November 1, 2018, 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
First class: Thursday, November 8, 2018, 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Medicare Parts B and C cover DPP for its members who qualify. Also, funds are often available to pay for the workshop if you meet eligibility requirements. To be considered for a class, you must attend the information session on November 1. Please RSVP by visiting ReadySetPrevent.org or calling the Diabetes Prevention Center at 810-232-0522.

The evidence-based Diabetes Prevention Program is a yearlong program designed for people with prediabetes or at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes, with the goal that participants will adopt and maintain a healthy lifestyle. DPP workshops are led by trained lifestyle coaches during 16 weekly one-hour group sessions and eight monthly sessions that follow.

Participants learn how to eat healthy, add physical activity to their routine, manage stress, stay motivated and solve problems that can get in the way of healthy changes. The program’s group setting provides a supportive environment with people who are facing similar challenges and trying to make the same changes. Together, participants celebrate their successes and find ways to overcome obstacles.

People with prediabetes often have no symptoms. To find out if you have prediabetes or if you are at risk for it, you can:

  • find out about your risk by calling the Diabetes Prevention Center at 810-232-0522.
  • find out your risk via the risk test at ReadySetPrevent.org. The risk test will also be provided at the information session.
  • ask your doctor to tell you if you are at risk for diabetes. If you do not have a doctor because you do not have health care coverage, consider applying for health care coverage, including Medicaid, through your local Department of Health and Human Services office. You can also apply online at or call 1-855-789-5610.

To RSVP for DPP or for more information, visit ReadySetPrevent.org or call 810-232-0522.
