Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. hosts library project on September 30 for Midwest Impact Day of Service

FLINT, MI – The Flint Alumnae and Mu Phi Chapters of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. invite the community to the Midwest Impact Day of Service: Library Project on Saturday, September 30, from noon to 3 p.m., at the Gloria Coles Flint Public Library, 1026 E. Kearsley Street, Flint, MI 48503.
This event will include awareness-raising activities to continue highlighting the critical need to keep diversity in literacy with Seeing Black in REaD. According to reports by the American Library Association, of the record 2,571 unique titles targeted for censorship, most were by or about LGBTQIA+ persons and Black, Indigenous, and people of color.
“We understand the importance of literacy in our community and especially with our youth and young adults,” said Tamar Swain, president of the Flint Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
“We must continue highlighting the importance of diversity and historical stories in books while celebrating the freedom to read at our local libraries,” Swain added.
In addition to celebrating the freedom to read, there will be meet-ups with local and regional authors,  book giveaways, voter registration, library card registration, food and prizes.
“As a college student, reading a diverse collection of books is invaluable to my learning,” said Sierra Laney,  president of Mu Phi Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
Laney added: “I hope that the community and families join us on this day of service and have some fun at the same time.”
This event is free and open to the public.
