The community is invited to a celebration and rededication of Flint’s very first public park!
The Friends of McFarlan Veterans Park, with support from FIM and Back to The Bricks, will host rededication ceremonies at the park Thursday, July 13, 2023, starting at 4 p.m. A brass quintet from the FIM Flint Symphony Orchestra will perform specially chosen music throughout the ceremony as part of its Music Around Town Series.
Purchased by the City of Flint from Farmer, Lumber Baron and Flint Mayor Alexander McFarlan in 1875, the park “….was the basis for the park and recreation system which now extends of all parts of the city.” In 1951, the park received the designation of Genesee County’s official war memorial.
Located just north of the Flint River bridge on Saginaw Street (directly in front of The Durant Luxury Apartments), McFarlan Veterans Memorial Park honors the thousands of Genesee County military veterans who gave up their lives in battles dating back to the Civil War.
After several years of fundraising, financial support from area businesses and community organizations, and a dedicated volunteer base, an extensive renovation and upgrade of the park began in 2022, and is now nearly complete.
Those wishing to help celebrate this occasion in the form of a patriotic salute involving music and the spoken word are invited to attend the July 13 event!
