This is first of an exclusive series about an impressive group of five young Flint men, the Flint Renaissance
Era, who are using their friendship and talents to unify the Flint community. Our first story is about
musican Da’Christian Brown-Pinson

Young Flint resident Da’Christian “Butter” Brown-Pinson has been singing since age 7 and has been playing bass for about 2 ½ years.

Early in life, Brown-Pinson realized he had musical talent. Brown-Pinson told the Courier his family is also musically inclined.

“My granddad-he’s a bass player,” he continued. “My mother’s a singer, and my brother’s a rapper. Those are the people who really inspired me to make music and really put that passion on me to be a musician.”

18-year-old Brown-Pinson recently graduated from Madison Academy High School and plans to enroll at Mott Community College.

“I always tell everybody that in my first talent show in 8th grade, I won first place,” explained Brown-Pinson.

For the show, Brown-Pinson performed with Fellow Singer Jeremiah Prince at Burton Glen Academy.

“As a musician, I was the first freshman ever to be in band. I just caught on to the bass. When I hear the bass, it’s like the foundation of the song. It holds down the beat, and then the lyrics as well.”

Brown-Pinson has also performed recently at the Signature Chop House in Flushing, Michigan with the Flint Water Collective. He will perform at the Flint Farmer’s Market at the end of the month as part of the WOW Outreach Program. Additionally, he has performed at area churches including Joy Tabernacle, Bethlehem Temple and Second Friendship Church.

“My ultimate goal is to help unify the community. It’s to bring people together. I feel like that’s what music does.”

Brown-Pinson has been part of the group The Flint Renaissance Era since October 2022. The group was formed around September 2022.

“Antonio Sweeney, Kameron Motley and Davonte Williams were just talking. Antonio was talking about having something to unify the community. Davonte actually came up with the name Flint Renaissance Era.”

Brown-Pinson explained Williams, who goes by the stage name ‘Wuta,’ believes we’re in a new era now: the Renaissance Era.

Isaiah Baker, who goes by ‘Jaddai,’ is the other member of The Flint Renaissance Era.

The group started an open mic night at Comma Bookstore and Social Hub. The last show was Dec. 1 and included a freestyle battle with a reward of $20.

“It was amazing how the people were interacting with the show.”

Future open mics are being planned for 2023.

The Flint Renaissance Era is one of the featured groups for Flint’s Got Talent, being held from 5-9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16. They were among the top 10 selected groups competing for prize money.

Brown-Pinson gave examples of how his gifts are blessing the community and inspiring other people, including youth.

“At church, a lot of people come up to me after I’m done singing and say my singing resonates with their spirit to get more connected with God. My little cousins go by the Fli City Twins. They’re performing in Flint’s Got Talent as well. Since they were little, they’ve been looking up to me and been inspired by what I’m doing. I’m so proud of them.”

Brown-Pinson believes it’s important for people to start using their gifts as early in life as possible because it’s empowering to themselves, as well as other people.

“Flint’ got so much talent. I’ve seen it firsthand with my family and friends, or just people around me. People can do it. They’re just not inspired enough to go forward with whatever they want to do. I feel like us doing what we do will help inspire others to come out and showcase what they can bring to the world.”

Brown-Pinson’s musical single with fellow group member Motley (who goes by ‘King Kam’) “Ready Now” will be released this month.  Additionally, other music is to be released by other members of The Flint Renaissance Era.
