On May 12, former Democratic state senator; Morris Hood II, died after a long battle with COVID-19. He was 54 years old.

Hood served in the House from 2003-2008. He represented in the 3rd Senate District in Detroit, Dearborn and Melvindale for eight years from 2011-2018. He also had worked for Wayne County in state government relations in more recent years.

In 2016, Hood was a kidney transplant recipient.
While hospitalized recently for coronavirus, Hood had one point seemed to be in recovery. Unfortunately, he went back on a ventilator a few weeks ago when he suffered from a second bout of the coronavirus which eventually killed him.

Detroit City Council held a moment of silence for Hood on May 12.

“Morris was a dear friend,” said Governor Gretchen Whitmer in her statement.
He was a proud Detroiter and continued the family commitment to the service of his community,” Whitmer added. “There was not a more loyal friend, thoughtful advisor or quicker wit. Mo was the type of guy that lit up the room and made you glad to be there. He is doing that in his next life now and those of us left here are better having known him. May he rest in peace. My love and prayers go to his beloved family and many friends who grieve this tough loss.”

“I’m heartbroken by Morris Hood’s passing,” said Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist on a Facebook post.
“He was a fighter: for our city and for his life,” Gilchrist added. “It is devastating that so many incredible lives are stripped from us by this virus. I take solace in knowing that his spirit will live on in Detroit through his good work. “
