Correcting vaccine misinformation

Written by Tanya Terry

On March 14, 2023, a tweeter posted that nearly 10 times more college students have died from the COVID vaccine compared to the COVID-19 virus. The tweeter suggested that colleges and universities should mandate COVID infection to keep students safe. The tweet received over 175K views. The claim was based on a spreadsheet the tweeter collected himself and data he collected from those who wanted to report to him.

Of the 147 spreadsheet entries, at least 15 were duplicates, 4 were left completely blank and several listed no name and a bad URL. In addition, participants linked to articles that didn’t mention COVID-19, vaccination status or cause of death. Another participant listed a long-time condition as a cause of death. Numerous participants said the mandate was “not sure” and the vaccine was “suspected. To see the spreadsheet, click here: https://airtable.com/shrv7GSsy0Qsf2zpS/tblJCiukHJiOnovaj

Recent studies show that about 60% of people share content that they haven’t even clicked on themselves.

At a meeting held earlier in March by Voices by Vaccines, there were some key takeaways, listed below.

  • People believe myths that fit into their identity.
  • Prebunking myths helps prevent their spread.
  • Vaccine myths are FAR more common than vaccine truth on social media.
  • Vaccines do not turn you into a werewolf.

Voices for Vaccines is a family-led organization that serves as a catalyst to spark positive peer-to-peer conversations about vaccines and the diseases they prevent by supporting communities, building networks, and developing fact-based content that enables parents to make healthy, informed decisions about vaccination for their children and their communities.

Information provided by Voices by Vaccines is aggregated from the CDC and other trusted resources.
