Mott Community College announces $97,790 in grants from Community Foundation of Greater Flint

Funding will support literacy efforts through the Flint Genesee Literacy Network and Women in Education program at MCC

Mott Community College (MCC) announced on October 16 it has received two generous grants from the Community Foundation of Greater Flint.

A grant for $7,790 will support the Women in Education Fellowship Program (WIE), whose mission is to provide financially challenged MCC female students with an outstanding opportunity to receive individual academic and personal support from professional women in their designated fields of study. Many women have barriers to completing their educational goals. This funding helps to reduce and/or eliminate barriers, while the program activities bolster confidence and professional development.

A second grant for $90,000 will support the literacy efforts of the Flint Genesee Literacy Network (FLGN). The FLGN’s mission is to seek out, convene, align and build capacity in partners who improve the lives of individuals, children and families of Flint and Genesee County by radically raising literacy levels. Together, they mobilize the strengths of the partnership and community; identify gaps in service delivery; develop goals; and measure the impact of their efforts toward the ultimate goal of increasing literacy levels in our community.

“On behalf of Mott Community College, we are grateful for the Community Foundation’s ongoing support of these amazing programs,” said MCC President Dr. Beverly Walker-Griffea.

She added: “MCC is a place of purpose and possibility. We are committed to excellence in education and offering services that cultivate student success and improve the overall quality of life in our multicultural community. Programs like the Women in Education and Flint Genesee Literacy Network are just two examples where MCC works with our community partners to eliminate barriers to participant success. We are changing lives for a changing world every day, by moving forward, together.”
