Mission Possible is currently registering those interested in participating in a ASAP, a new structured, supportive program that is expected to make a meaningful impact by helping area residents to achieve financial stability and build wealth.
Participants will save $500 over six months, which will be matched with $2,000 to be used towards specific assets,” according to Gianna Oliver, program manager for Mission Possible.
“The Accelerated Savings Program operates over a yearlong commitment, beginning with a six-month savings period” Oliver explained. “Participants save for specific assets, such as a home, vehicle or starting or expanding a business. Their savings are matched to a four-to-one ratio, meaning that every dollar we match by four up to $500 dollars.”
Mission Possible reached out to the community to see who had like-minded thoughts on the program and who wanted to end and reduce systematic racism and economic barriers.
Oliver told the Courier Flint was chosen for this program because of its resilient and vibrant community, which has faced significant economic challenges in recent years.
The organization’s founder is a Flint native and our entire team cares about the community.
“The city has a rich history and a strong spirit of perseverance, but it has also been impacted by issues like job loss, economic decline, and public health crises,” added Oliver. “Notably, 33.3% of the population in Flint lives below the poverty line (26.6k out of 80k people), a number significantly higher than the national average of 12.5%. We wanted to create a program that addresses these challenges head-on by providing residents with the tools and resources to build wealth, achieve financial stability and improve their quality of life. By focusing on Flint, we’re aiming to make a meaningful impact in a community that truly deserves support and empowerment.”
Oliver said education is a crucial part of ASAP. Monthly financial literacy workshops will cover topics such as budgeting, savings and managing credit. Oliver also stated Mission Possible will provide asset specific education tailored to participants’ individual goals.
Oliver pointed out systemic racism and economic barriers have long prevented marginalized communities from accessing opportunities to build wealth and achieve financial security.
Oliver stated: “By focusing on these issues, ASAP aims to create a more equitable and inclusive environment where all community members have the chance to succeed. We’re committed to dismantling these barriers and providing resources and support to those who have been historically underserved.”
Throughout the unique ASAP program, participants receive monthly coaching sessions to monitor their progress, address challenges and provide ongoing support.
“Our staff work closely with participants to set and achieve savings goals, offering guidance and encouragement along the way.”
Mission Possible expects ASAP to have a profound impact by enabling participants to acquire valuable assets that can transform their lives.
“Whether it’s securing stable housing, reliable transportation or launching a business, these assets can significantly improve financial security and quality of life. Ultimately, we hope to foster greater economic resilience and opportunity within our community.”
According to Oliver, the most rewarding aspect of ASAP for Mission Possible will be witnessing the transformation in the participants.
“It will be incredible to see them gain confidence, achieve their financial goals, and improve their overall quality of life. Knowing that we’re helping to create lasting, positive change in the community is incredibly fulfilling for our team.”
The community can support ASAP by becoming sponsors, offering their expertise as volunteers or simply helping to spread the word.
“We also welcome local businesses to partner with us in providing additional resources and opportunities for our participants. Interested individuals can contact us for more information on how to get involved.”
The future of ASAP looks bright!
“We envision expanding the range of assets participants can save for, including options like investment accounts and retirement savings. We also aim to broaden our outreach to include more communities and increase the number of participants. Our ultimate goal is to create a sustainable model that can be replicated in other regions, empowering more individuals and families to build wealth and improve their quality of life. We’re excited to see how the program evolves and the lasting impact it will have on the community.”
“The Accelerated Saving and Asset Program (ASAP) was made possible by a grant from the Poverty Fund of the Community Foundation of Greater Flint. The program is sponsored by Financial Plus Credit Union and Flower of Life.
Mission Possible currently has four available spots for their upcoming ASAP session. Participants must Flint residents who are 22 or older. Applications can be taken until September 20.
