WHO: Consumers Energy, City of Flint, other participants
WHAT: Celebrating Flint’s Juneteenth celebration. Consumers Energy is sponsoring the Flint Trolley Ice Cream & Café at the event. Free meals, water and ice cream will be provided to the event’s 400 expected celebration attendees.
Exhibit booths will also provide information on Consumers Energy diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, as well as energy efficiency tips and line worker programs. There will also be a drawing for prizes.
WHEN: Saturday, June 19, 2021 from 4:00 p.m. to 8 p.m.
WHERE: Brush Park, 120 E. 1st St., Flint 48502 – Consumers Energy will be located on the sidewalk in front of the blue FLINT letters.
Some important facts:
§ Juneteenth is a celebration of African American freedom and heritage. Celebrated nationwide on June 19, it commemorates the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas were freed, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
§ Flint Mayor Sheldon Neeley spearheaded plans to make Juneteenth an official holiday during a similar celebration in 2020, making Flint the first city in Michigan to do so.
§ Event organizers include a coalition that has planned multiple events for the weekend celebration.
