Residents demand support as they fight for a healthy, safe state for all
DETROIT – The Coalition to Stop Ajax Asphalt Plant and the Grand Rapids Climate Coalition will host a virtual press event on Friday in response to Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s State of the State address and the need for environmental justice. Speakers will include affected community leaders from across the state. Speakers will be calling on the governor to take action on environmental and climate justice issues in Michigan.
Communities across the state have been working to overcome many environmental hardships including unprecedented flooding, unsafe drinking water and dangerously low levels of air quality with negative health impacts. None of these issues were addressed by Governor Whitmer during last week’s State of the State address and leaders are calling on Whitmer to revamp priorities to make Michigan livable for all residents regardless of color, ethnicity or income.
The Stop AJAX Coalition includes the St. Francis Prayer Center, C.A.U.T.I.O.N, Environmental Transformation Movement of Flint, Flint Rising, Greater Holy Temple Church, Michigan United, R. L. Jones Community Outreach Center Campus, Mi JustUs, and residents of Flint and Genesee Township. The Grand Rapids Climate Coalition is composed of over 60 local organizations working to achieve community-wide carbon neutrality for Grand Rapids by 2030.
