FLINT, Mich – On Monday, January 13, 2025, the City of Flint will officially launch its Peer Mediation Program, an innovative initiative aimed at fostering conflict resolution, improving school culture, and empowering student leaders across the district.

The program has garnered significant interest, with a total of 40 students enrolled, including five from Flint Southwestern Classical Academy, five from Accelerated Learning Academy, and ten from each participating elementary and middle school. This diverse group of students will be equipped with essential skills to help mediate conflicts among their peers, promote understanding, and create a more harmonious learning environment.

“Peer mediation is a proven method for addressing conflicts constructively, and we are excited to bring this opportunity to our youth,” said Latrese Brown, Program Director Community Based Violence Intervention and Prevention Initiative. “This program not only supports academic success by reducing disruptions, but it will also help students develop critical life skills such as communication, empathy, and leadership.”

Through structured training sessions and hands-on experience, student mediators will learn techniques to identify issues, facilitate conversations, and guide their peers toward positive resolutions. By giving students the tools to manage disputes effectively, the program aligns with the district’s commitment to fostering safe and inclusive schools.

There will be a special kickoff celebration for the program launch at Southwestern Classical Academy on January 13. Students, staff, and community police officers will come together in support of this transformative initiative. Media is welcome to attend.
