Capturing memories: Flint community brain health event offers access to cutting-edge testing for early detection of Alzheimer’s at NO COST

Chicago, IL and Flint, MI – For many, the fear of Alzheimer’s disease looms large, often associated with heightened concerns about memory loss. But experts say the reality is far different. The disease often begins its insidious work silently, years – even decades – before the first noticeable signs of cognitive trouble appear.

“The process of developing Alzheimer’s is long and slow with 15–20 years before the onset of Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI),” explains Dr. Rany Aburashed, neurologist and Chief Executive Officer of Neurogen Biomarking. “MCI precedes Alzheimer’s disease by many years.”

It’s this crucial, often-missed window for intervention that’s driving a unique community health event in Flint on Saturday, June 21 at Insight, 4800 South Saginaw Street conveniently located at I 475 and Hemphill Road from 10 a.m. 3 p.m.

Participants at this event will receive results within days, along with a Brain Health Action Plan and a follow-up telehealth consult, if appropriate, to review results with a neurologist. Only 250 testing spots are available. Advance registration is required at www.MyBrainDay.com.

Eligible attendees will receive a cognitive assessment and blood biomarker testing with results within days and neurology consultation if needed via telehealth— services typically valued at more than $500 — all at no cost. The community event will also be held in Coldwater, Michigan on July 12 at Insight.

This free event also offers a welcoming environment where attendees are encouraged to bring a friend to support their brain health journey and enjoy free food. The initiative supports Neurogen’s broader mission to bring at-home brain health test kits and telehealth consultations to communities across the country.

Having seen how devastating Alzheimer’s is to entire families, Flint Courier News staff L. M. Land is very interested in learning more.  She will be taking the test and will let you know what kind of information it is possible to learn in a future issue.

Neurogen Biomarking, founded by Dr. Aburashed at Insight Hospital in Chicago, is hosting “Capturing Memories” Community Brain Health Day, offering area residents a chance to access cutting-edge testing at no cost — testing that is typically unavailable or difficult to access and may provide early insight into brain health long before significant memory issues arise.

“Neurogen is championing early detection of dementia due to Alzheimer’s disease and cognitive disorders by making innovative brain health care testing and care easily accessible for everyone,” said Dr. Aburashed. “Knowing more gives people the chance to make lifestyle changes, qualify for new medicines that may slow progression, or participate in clinical trials.”

Dr. Jawad Shah, Corporate President and Chief Executive Officer of Insight, emphasized the local significance of the initiative. “As someone who has lived and worked in Flint for many years, I am constantly looking for new ways to serve this incredible community,” said Dr. Shah. “At Insight, our growth has always been driven by a sincere desire to help others — and this event is a reflection of that purpose. By providing access to advanced brain health testing right here in Flint, we are living our mission to give back selflessly and meet people where they are.”

The Capturing Memories event is in partnership with Linus Health, a digital health company specializing in brain health solutions. Neurogen and Linus Health hosted Capturing Memories in Chicago last month and tested 187 people. Test results of  approximately 20% of participants were detected and flagged as at high-risk of potentially developing Alzheimer’s dementia.

“We are proud to once again partner with Neurogen Biomarking to bring innovative, community-centered brain health solutions to those who need them most,” said David Bates, CEO and co-founder of Linus Health.

Bates added: “This event exemplifies our shared commitment to empowering communities with accessible technology, actionable insights, and pathways to precision-based proactive care.”

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, over 7 million Americans aged 65+ lived with Alzheimer’s dementia in 2024, and millions more may have undiagnosed memory concerns. The need for early detection is particularly critical in underserved communities. African American and Latino populations are disproportionately impacted by the disease and are less likely to receive early diagnosis or participate in research.

Yet, public interest in early testing is strong, with 91% of respondents in a recent Alzheimer’s Association survey saying they would take a simple test (such as a blood biomarker test) if it were available, even though few are familiar with such options today.
