Black Scholars Blessed With Not Just One, But Two Noted Speakers

                             Dr Delila Owens

             Dr. Delia Owens

Dr. Delila Owens, Associate Professor of School Counseling at The University of Akron served as the keynote speaker at the 2014 Urban League of Flint Salute to Black Scholars Tribute. Owens is a native of Flint, Michigan. She comes from a long line of teachers. Owens became passionate
about ways to improve education and the lives of youth when she was fourteen years old. Her primary research agenda is focused on academic persistence and African American males.

Dr. Owens opened her keynote address with a short song “Think Big,” by Walt Whitman. The title of her address was “The Three P’s-Persistence, Purpose and Past.” She stressed to the scholars the importance of education and using their skills to improve the lives of others. She concluded
her address with humorous words of wisdom from her mother. “I want all students to do the best that they can, keep striving in spite of challenges and stay committed to their academic goals. I believe that education is the great equalizer”, said Owens. Owens received her undergraduate degree from Ferris State University and graduate degrees from Central Michigan University and Michigan State
University.

               Ms. Norma Richards

At this year’s Salute to Black Scholar’s Tribute, Norma Richards admonished scholars on the Commencement of Good Choices, as an educator, a researcher, and mother, she had some very good advice for the them and the audience. What Norma Richards has accomplished is nothing short of a miracle. She managed to send her 3 children to college on FULL academic scholarships
in engineering—saving her family close to a half million dollars in college expenses!

Now, this Mom is on a mission to help other parents do the same. Norma’s new book, “Free Ride to College: A Guide to Grooming Your Kids for Academic Scholarships,” shares with the world, a simple plan to acquiring hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarship money! Faced with the prospect of having to earn or borrow hundreds of thousands of dollars to send three kids to college, Norma thought, “there has to be a better way!” A microbiologist and science teacher by trade, Norma set out to prove her hypothesis that her three kids could be groomed to earn a full academic scholarship—in spite of the fact that one child was labeled as a candidate for special education, another labeled as having Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and the youngest was
almost legally blind.

This “Miracle Mom” let nothing stand in her way. She did her homework and discovered there really is a science to acquiring a full academic scholarship to college. Her three children have proven it—and Norma’s book, “Free Ride to College” is a hypothesis that works! A native of Flint, Michigan, Norma is a successful entrepreneur and certified science teacher in the state of Ohio. She earned a bachelor of science in Microbiology from Howard University (HBCU) in Washington D.C., and has called Columbus, Ohio home for over 30 years. Ms. Richards returns to Flint often to visit family and friends, because as she says, “Flint is home.

To all the Graduates who participated and were honored at this year’s Salute to Black Scholar’s Tribute, we congratulate you, our prayers are with you and wish you continued success in whatever field of study you choose.
