Lansing, Mich.— AARP Michigan recently released findings from its 2025 Vital Voices survey, offering a
comprehensive look at the top priorities, concerns and experiences of Michiganders age 45 and older.
The research highlights key issues such as health care, financial security, caregiving and livable communities—providing critical insights that will shape AARP’s advocacy work across the state.

The Vital Voices initiative is part of AARP’s nationwide effort to better understand the evolving needs of
older adults in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

In Michigan, AARP surveyed 704 adults age 45 and older. Among the key findings:
Financial Security: An overwhelming majority (92%) say protecting the future of Social Security
benefits is a top concern.

Family Caregiving: Nearly 9 in 10 (87%) support shifting more state long-term care funding toward in-home care rather than nursing homes. Similarly, 86% back a state income tax credit for family caregivers who shoulder out-of-pocket expenses.

Property Taxes: More than 8 in 10 (82%) worry that rising property taxes could make it harder to stay in their homes as they age.

Prescription Drug Costs: Nearly two-thirds (65%) say they are concerned about rising prescription drug prices over the next two years. In light of these concerns, almost three- quarters (73%) favor establishing a prescription drug affordability board to help rein in prices.

“This research gives older Michiganders a much-needed voice at a time when many feel unheard,” said
Paula D. Cunningham, state director of AARP Michigan. “Their insights will help guide our advocacy and
ensure the policies we fight for truly reflect what people need to live with dignity, independence and
purpose.”

This marks AARP’s second round of Vital Voices research. Data from the first survey (2019–2021) played
a key role in informing public policy discussions and supporting testimony before the Legislature.

The 2025 findings will be shared with policymakers and community leaders to:
*Anticipate emerging needs and policy priorities.
*Shape innovative programs and initiatives.
*Track evolving attitudes and concerns over time.
* Drive action on key advocacy issues impacting older adults.
