This year, the City of Flint’s junior mayors will help light the tree. These upper elementary-age students spent a day with Neeley meeting with senior staff, touring City Hall and the Flint Police Department and sharing their ideas for running a city.
“The annual tree lighting is an opportunity for young people to understand the importance of giving during this season,” Neeley said. “Our junior mayors are stepping up to provide a symbol of hope and optimism. There is no one better than our youth to lead us.”
In addition to the traditional city tree, three smaller new trees make their debut this year. One has blue lights in honor of Flint police, another has red lights in honor of Flint firefighters and a third has multi-colored lights to symbolize unity and peace.
