FLINT, Mich. — The US Department of Justice’s (DOJ) Civil Rights Division sent a notice to the City of Flint informing the City Clerk’s Office that they would be monitoring polling places within the city on November 3rd, Election Day.
As the date approaches, the Flint City Clerk’s Office has reaffirmed its commitment to safe, secure and transparent local elections, and that includes the vital role it notes that the DOJ plays in safeguarding civil rights and ensuring accessible and fair elections.
DOJ monitors are a routine part of the election process, having observed several past federal elections in Michigan, including the 2024 primary. City Clerk officials operate in regular contact with state partners and stand fully prepared to ensure compliance with all Voting Rights Act provisions and federal election laws.
Laws governing the conduct of elections set boundaries for federal monitors, election challengers and independent observers at polling locations. The Flint City Clerk’s Office stated community members should feel assured that the DOJ’s presence is a routine element of our system, and they fully expect these individuals to honor state and federal requirements just as they did during the recent August Primary.
Michigan’s voting framework remains protected and reliable. In practice, federal observers operate similarly to standard public poll watchers; they are strictly prohibited from interacting with voters, handling voting equipment or physical ballots, or hindering precinct operations.
Flint election personnel remain dedicated to safeguarding the franchise, ensuring that every qualified Flint resident can cast their vote seamlessly while all authorized observers follow governing protocols.
