MICH – On August 17, Michigan’s nonpartisan Bureau of Elections announced that Americans for Citizen Voting-Michigan (ACVM) failed to meet the amount of signatures required for certification and access to the November ballot. The initiative sought to require proof of citizenship documents, like a passport or certified birth certificate, to register to vote. In response the ACLU Fund of Michigan, Engage Michigan, Michigan Voices and Promote the Vote Fund said the following:
“This is good news for Michiganders and our voting freedoms…
“We appreciate the work that the nonpartisan Bureau of Elections does to review collected signatures and look forward to the conclusion that Michigan’s bipartisan Board of Canvassers comes to after reviewing them on August 24.
“We are committed to creating a voting system that works for everyone, and will continue to advocate for Michigan voters, fighting any attempt to put barriers between them and the ballot box.”
