Flint City Councilman Leon El-Alamin was scheduled to appear in Genesee County Circuit Court before Judge Carrie Hanible on Wednesday, March 20, 2026, for the start of his trial on felony assault for intent to do great bodily harm less than murder charge. However, the trial was rescheduled for a second time, with the new trial date set for June 17, 2026.
Judge Khary Hanible adjourned the case due to scheduling conflicts with another case.
“It was older and ready to start,” a representative from Hanible’s office stated of the other case.
“It was an older case, and there’s no other reason,” the representative continued.
The trial for El-Alamin had previously been scheduled for May 11 but was rescheduled to May 20 as El-Alamin’s attorneys and prosecutors continued to discuss a potential plea agreement.
Despite an objection by Genesee County Assistant Prosecutor Jon Poulos, Judge Hanible also previously lifted the bond requirement for monitoring the councilman’s whereabouts through an electronic tether.
El-Alamin faces a felony charge of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder for allegedly punching and choking a woman in a Mount Morris Township home in July 2025. He also faces a misdemeanor domestic violence charge.
The alleged victim, who is the mother of El-Alamin’s child, has expressed reluctance in testifying against him. According to the defense, she stated that she and El-Alamin had resolved all contentious matters in their relationship.
If convicted, El-Alamin could face up to 10 years in prison for the felony.
