There are few roles in life more powerful than that of a mother. Mothers are our first teachers, our fiercest protectors and often our greatest source of strength. They shape our values, guide our decisions and pour into us long before the world ever recognizes our potential.
In the city of Flint, we understand a simple truth: when we uplift mothers, we uplift families. When families are strong, our community is stronger.
As we prepare for the 4th Annual Mother’s Appreciation Brunch at the Mays Senior and Community Center, I am reminded that this celebration is more than an event; it is deeply personal.
In 2022, my wife, State Representative Cynthia Neeley, and I experienced a profound loss. We both lost our mothers just one week apart. That kind of loss changes you. It reminds you that so much of who you are is rooted in the love, sacrifice and wisdom of the women who raised you.
This brunch was born out of both appreciation and remembrance. It is our way of honoring their legacy while recognizing the mothers across Flint who continue to lead with strength, resilience and grace.

Motherhood requires sacrifice. It demands patience. It calls for strength, even in the face of adversity. In Flint, we see mothers leading households, supporting their children’s dreams, building businesses and holding communities together. They are planners. They are partners, and they are women of prayer.
I also want to be clear: this celebration is a labor of love. My wife and I are personally funding this event because we believe in honoring mothers in a meaningful and tangible way.
To every mother, grandmother, aunt, mentor and mother figure, this moment is for you. You are seen. You are valued. And you are appreciated beyond words.
