Gloria Coles Flint Public Library to celebrate 175-year anniversary with March 21 kickoff event

Flint, MI – In 1851, a small but determined group of Flint women made a bold and forward-thinking choice. They believed that children in their community deserved access to books and knowledge even at a time when free public schools did not yet exist. Their vision laid the foundation for what would become the Gloria Coles Flint Public Library, a place committed to opening doors, supporting families, and creating opportunities for generations of Flint residents.

Nearly 175 years later, the Library continues to grow alongside the community it serves. From handwritten catalog cards to today’s digital resources, it remains a vital community hub, a trusted resource, and a gateway to opportunity. It is a place where neighbors gather, families are supported, and everyone can explore, learn and connect.

To mark this historic milestone, the Library is hosting 175-year events throughout 2026 under the theme “Building Stories Together for 175 Years.” The yearlong celebration highlights the people, programs and stories that have made the Library an enduring part of Flint’s life.

The celebration kicks off on Saturday, March 21, 2026, with a performance by the beloved folk group Mustard’s Retreat in the C.S. Mott Foundation Community Room from 2 – 3 p.m. Attendees can enjoy music, giveaways and food as the Library launches this yearlong celebration.

Other highlights include:

  • April – Julia A. Moore Poetry Contest: Celebrate local literature with prize giveaways and recognition for judges.
  • May – Celebrating Black Labor History in Flint and Beyond: Speakers explore the contributions of Black workers and the historical movements that shaped Flint.
  • June – Juneteenth Celebration: In partnership with the Flint Cultural Center, festivities include children’s activities, live music, and other special surprises.
  • July – Michigan Storytellers Festival: Local and regional storytellers showcase the power of oral tradition.
  • August – Black Business Month: Partnering with Black-owned businesses to celebrate entrepreneurship and community impact.
  • September – Build Your Home Library Event: Youth ages 0 to 18 will receive books, reusable bags at a book fair-style event, with musical entertainment.

And so much more
