Flint – Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church will host a Day of Prayer on Saturday, March 21 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the church, located at 2109 MLK Ave, in Flint. The event marks the 40th anniversary of a citywide call to prayer first proclaimed by the City of Flint in 1986.
In 1986, then-Mayor James A. Sharp, Jr. issued an official proclamation declaring March 21, 1986 as “A Day of Prayer” in the city of Flint, encouraging the community to come together in prayer for peace, unity and healing during a time of significant challenges in the city. Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church initiated the effort by inviting the community to pause and pray for the removal of crime and for positive change throughout Flint.
Forty years later, Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church continues that tradition by bringing together churches from across the city, community leaders and local elected officials to unite in prayer for Flint’s future.
“This gathering honors the 1986 proclamation that called our city to prayer,” said Pastor Rodney Ellison of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church. “As we commemorate 40 years since that moment, we are grateful for the opportunity to bring our community together in prayer for Flint. It’s especially meaningful as we also look ahead to celebrating 60 years of ministry, next year!”
The event is open to the public, and community members are encouraged to attend.
