Flint, MI — July 14, 2025 — Local law enforcement agencies have announced a community-building event happening this Saturday, July 19, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. The “Basketball Cop Community Event” will be held at McCree Flat Lot, located at 610 Beach Street in downtown Flint.
This event is intended to provide a fun and engaging opportunity for local kids to connect with police officers outside of their usual duties. Participants will enjoy free food, games, and a friendly basketball tournament in a safe, family-friendly environment.
“Our goal is to create positive interactions between law enforcement and the youth in our community,” said Department Spokesperson Tyrone Booth. “This is a chance for young people to have fun, build relationships, and see police officers as accessible members of their community.”
Engagement like this fosters trust and understanding, which are essential for building lasting partnerships between law enforcement and residents.
“When community members and officers know each other personally, it creates the comfort and confidence necessary to effectively manage situations when tensions may arise,” Booth added.
Participating agencies include the Genesee County Sheriff’s Department, the University of Michigan Police Department, Michigan State Police and the City of Flint Police Department.
The event is free and open to all families. The organizers hope to see a great turnout and look forward
to strengthening community bonds through this enjoyable day of sports and camaraderie.
