Applications being accepted starting today for vacancy in the Office of Council Member – 1st Ward

First (1st) Ward Flint City Council Member Eric Mays passed away on February 24, 2024.
Pursuant to Flint City Charter §2410(B)(1), VACANCY IN THE OFFICE OF COUNCIL
MEMBER, whenever a vacancy occurs on the City Council and “more than eighteen (18) months
remain in any unexpired term, the City Council shall within thirty (30) days appoint a person
having the same qualifications for such office.”

Flint City Charter §2101, QUALIFICATIONS FOR ELECTIVE OFFICE, states that, if appointed
to the elected office, a City Official shall “be a registered elector of the City for one year prior to
the filing deadline for that office and a resident of the ward for which they serve and continue
that residency until the end of their term.”

QUALIFIED REGISTERED VOTERS, WHO ARE RESIDENTS OF THE 1ST WARD AND WHO ARE INTERESTED IN APPLYING FOR THE POSITION OF 1ST WARD COUNCIL MEMBER, CAN SUBMIT A RESUME/CV/BIOGRAPHY OR LETTER OF INTEREST AS “APPLICATION” TO:

**APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED BEGINNING MONDAY, MARCH 4, 2024, WITH A SUBMISSION DEADLINE OF 5:00 P.M., MONDAY, MARCH 18, 2024.**

Per Flint City Charter §2410(B)(2) and (3), the City Council shall “schedule a special primary election as soon as possible to be followed by a special election to fill the office for the balance of the unexpired term, to be conducted in the same manner as is practical for the nomination, primary and general elections as is provided for in this Charter.” ‘
“The person appointed by the City Council shall serve until the special election is held and a candidate certified as elected.
