Judge approves recall language for three city council members

Written By Jameca Patrick-Singleton

On Tuesday June 27, 2023, the Genesee County Election Commission has approved recall language for city council members Ladel Lewis (Ward 2), Eva Worthing (Ward 9) and Allie Herkenroder (Ward 7). The language for each council member centered around each of the three council members not attending a meeting called by Sixth Ward Councilwoman Tonya Burns to address resident questions about the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding from the federal government as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Herkeroder announced her resignation which will be effective July 1, 2023, which, according to County Commissioner Domonique Clemons supersedes the recall.

Recalled council members have 10 days to appeal the decision.

Herkenroder, Lewis and Worthing are three of five council members to have recall language submitted against them recently. Recall language was submitted against 4th Ward Councilwoman Judy Priestly on May 23, but the commission did not approve those recall efforts to move forward. On June 21, a recall petition was filed against 1st Ward Councilman Eric Mays. The hearing determining if Mays will face recall alongside his colleagues has not yet been set.
