FLINT, MI—The University of Michigan-Flint will conduct a screening of “Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution,” a documentary detailing how one summer camp designed for teens with disabilities sparked a movement for equal rights and accessibility. Following the screening, Judy Heumann, a former camper turned international disability rights advocate, will join the event virtually for a panel discussion.
What: Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution Screening and Discussion
Who: Associate Professors of Education Christine Kenney and Melissa Sreckovic conceived of the event after showing the documentary in their classes; many students were shocked that they had not heard of the disability rights movement prior to this documentary.
Brandon Lesner, a recent graduate of UM-Flint’s online psychology program, arranged for Judy Heumann to participate in the event. Brandon’s work is informed by his passion for advocacy and his own experiences as a person with muscular dystrophy.
Judy Heumann, an international disability rights advocate, will join the event virtually for a panel discussion led by UM-Flint students after the documentary screening.
When: from 1:00 – 4:00 pm ET Wednesday, March 23, 2022.
Where: In-person and online. UM-Flint faculty, staff, and students may join the event in-person at the Harding Mott University Center Michigan Rooms (400 Mill St, Flint, MI 48503).
