(FLINT, Mich., July 1, 2025) — The Flint Parent Collaborative will host a workshop focused on “Youth Detention and The Impact on School Attendance” July 15 at 12:30 p.m. at the Gloria P. Coles Library in Flint. The workshop will be led by Juanita Lightfoot, former Rite Care Genesee program manager at Rite of Passage, Inc., Tadarius Lowe, mentor specialist, and JaQuez Hill, social worker and crisis intervention specialist.
“This is an important topic that deserves attention,” said Charese McLean, Flint Family Collaborative director. “Studies show that juvenile justice involvement negatively impacts school attendance and academic achievement. We want to start a dialog on alternatives to detention for students in Flint.”
In Genesee County, roughly 7% of youth referred to juvenile court are committed to placement facilities.
Workshop participants will earn a professional development certificate of completion from the Flint Parent Collaborative. Lunch will be provided.
