Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05), Chief Deputy Whip of the House Democratic Caucus, announced that the 2020 Congressional Art Competition has begun, encouraging all high school students (grades 9-12) who live in the Fifth Congressional District to submit artwork for the competition.
All art submissions must follow the art competition guidelines and be submitted no later than 5 p.m. May 29. The winner’s artwork will be on display for one year in the Cannon Tunnel to the U.S. Capitol along with the winners from other congressional districts across the country.
“I am excited to once again host this year’s Congressional Art Competition to highlight the amazing talent of young artists in Michigan,” Kildee said. “Art brings our community together and this competition, happening during the coronavirus pandemic, is important now more than ever. I can’t wait to see the creativity and beauty of this year’s submissions.”
Each spring, a nationwide high school arts competition is sponsored by the members of the U.S. House of Representatives Congressional Art Caucus. The contest is an opportunity to recognize and encourage the artistic talent in the nation and in the Fifth Congressional District. Last year’s winner was Linden High School junior, Quinn Arnold. The winning piece was a colored pencil drawing entitled “Primarily.” A high-resolution photo of Arnold’s artwork can also be viewed at https://www.house.gov/educators-and-students/congressional-art-competition/Michigan.
The artwork must be two-dimensional and can be no larger than 26 inches high, 26 inches wide and 4 inches deep, including the frame. No framed piece should weigh more than 15 pounds. Along with the artwork, each entrant must securely attach a Student Information and Release Form to the back of the artwork.
