Three defendants in 2020 Family Dollar fatal shooting get life in prison sentences Jan. 17

Written by Tanya Terry

On Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2023, three defendants in the shooting and killing of a security guard at the Family Dollar store on 5th Avenue in Flint that gained national attention were sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. They each were sentenced to additional years for weapons charges.

Calvin Munerlyn’s murder was on May 1, 2020. He was 43 years old.

The hearing went on for several weeks.  During that time, 47-year-old Larry Teague was removed from court after the judge ruled that he was being disruptive. He, therefore, was absent for his own sentencing. He also fired his attorney, which further delayed the hearing.

Larry Teague and 47-year-old Sharmel Teague (husband and wife) and 25-year-old Ramonyea Bishop (Sharmel Teague’s son) had been previously convicted of first-degree premeditated murder and felony firearm in November 2022.

Sharmel Teague and Brya Bishop went to the Family Dollar store on May 1 before the visit when the shooting took place, according to testimony.

Brya Bishop, who is the Ramonyea Bishop’s sister, was convicted by plea. She had pleaded no contest to charges of lying to police, being an accessory after the fact to a felony and tampering with evidence.

Surveillance video was played at the trial. The video showed Munerlyn arguing with Teague during the first visit. The argument was over the store’s face mask requirement at the time. Teague then appears to spit on Munerlyn. Munerlyn chases her to the store’s parking lot, tackling her to the ground two times. Bishop and Teague drove away in a red GMC Envoy. Teague told Munerlyn they would be back, according to a witness who testified at the trial.

Sharmel Teague and Byra Bishop went to a house on Atherton Road, then to Byra Bishop’s home near the store.

Ramonyea Bishop was dropped off on 2nd Avenue, then got back into the Envoy to be dropped off closer to the Family Dollar store. Larry Teague was dropped off in the parking area near Rally’s on Saginaw Street, also very near to the store.

Later, video shows Ramonyea Bishop walking into the store. Larry Teague came in shortly afterwards.

Munerlyn advances toward Larry Teague. Bishop approaches Munerlyn from behind, shooting him in the head.

Ramonyea Bishop said he saw Munerlyn’s hand around a gun in his pocket in his testimony. He said he feared his stepfather was going to get into a physical fight with Munerlyn.

Genesee Circuit Court Judge Brian S. Pickell sentenced the three individuals, holding them all responsible for Munerlyn’s death.
