The Resilient Bucs Take The GAC Red Division Crown

The Resilient Bucs Take The GAC Red Division Crown

By: Alex LaGrone

The Beecher Buccaneers dramatic comeback victory, late in the second half, knocked off tough conference rival Montrose Rams 19-14. The victory gave the 8-0 Bucs the Genesee Area Conference Red Division Title.

The game was close throughout the contest. With under 4 minutes left to play, Montrose running back, Alex Elasivich ran for a touchdown to give the Rams the lead 14-13.

Beecher wasn't done yet. With one minute and 27 seconds left in the game, the Bucs were facing a third and long. Quarterback, Marcus Wright, dropped back and hit wide receiver, Malik Ellison, with a 50 yard pass.

Wright found Ellison streaking down field while he was doubled covered. Ellison wanted the ball more than any of the other defenders and came down with the ball.

That monster catch set up a 1 yard run by Wright to seal the deal to another Division crown for the resilient Bucs. The dramatic victory set off a celebration not just from 9GA to Beecher H.S., but from the Beecher District and beyond.

The Bucs showed resiliency. They were able to withstand Montrose taking the lead late in the game on the road and finding a way to win.

Montrose head coach, Dennis Reinhart, said after the game "we had a situation where it's 3rd and long and they made a big play. We have to give them credit."

Teamwork is what won the game. Successful teamwork does not happen on its own. Teamwork and unity is developed overtime and takes focus and effort.

Head coach, Courtney Hawkins, and his coaching staff have shown leadership and has a group of young leaders.

The Bucs ship will sail in the direction that "The Captain" points to. Hawkins and the Bucs has its eyes on a bigger prize; a successful run in the upcoming state playoffs.
