The Annual Kwanzaa Celebration: Practicing the Nguzo Saba (7) Principles of Kwanzaa takes place in Flint & Genesee County, December 26, 2022 – January 1, 2023. Daily sessions will be hosted via Zoom. This event is open to anyone interested in participating or learning more about the infamous Afrikan tradition.
The Nguzo Saba (7 Principles of Kwanzaa) is a set of principles that guide the lives of the Afrikan people. Applying these practices to one’s daily lives can help provides stability, structure, a way of life and a way to succeed. Kwanzaa means “first fruit of the harvest” in the Afrikan language of Kiswalia. Many phrases used in Kwanzaa are in Swahili, which is the language chosen to represent Afrikan heritage. Continental Afrikan “first fruit” celebrations: ingathering; reverence; commemoration; recommitment; and celebration. Kwanzaa was established in 1966 in the midst of the Black Freedom Movement and thus reflects its concern for cultural groundedness in thought and practice, and the unity and self-determination associated with this. It was conceived and established to serve several functions.
The Annual Kwanzaa Celebration will be facilitated by Mr. DeWaun E. Robinson (Chair) with special appearances by the community leaders who will be presenting specific principles during the week-long celebration. A special thank you is extended to Mrs. E. Hill De Loney for her continued commitment to the Flint & Genesee County community.
