‘St. John’s Street: Story of a Neighborhood’ premieres on WKAR – East Lansing

iMichigan Productions presents a moving tribute to a community’s legacy

featuring stories of loss, resilience and hope

[Flint, MI] — iMichigan Productions is proudly presenting “St. John’s Street: Story of a Neighborhood,” an Emmy-nominated and Telly Award-winning documentary that delves into the rich history and cultural significance of the St. John Street neighborhood in Flint, Michigan. The documentary is an official selection at film festivals across the country. It will air on WKAR during Black History Month, offering a powerful exploration of a once-thriving Black community and the devastating impact of urban renewal.

Through compelling first-person interviews, “St. John’s Street” chronicles the lives of families who built a
vibrant, self-contained community in Flint, Michigan. Initially settled by African Americans migrating from the
South for opportunities in General Motors, the St. John Street neighborhood flourished as a cultural and
economic hub. However, in 1960, the City’s Master Plan called for its destruction to make way for Interstate
I-475. Over 7,000 residents were displaced, their homes and businesses, and landmarks were lost to highway construction. Despite this injustice, former residents have worked to preserve their story, culminating in efforts to establish a memorial park in their honor.

“Telling the story of ‘St. John’s Street: Story of a Neighborhood’ is about more than remembering a
neighborhood—it’s about honoring the resilience and legacy of a community that refused to be forgotten,”
said Rodney W. Brown, producer of St. John’s Street: Story of a Neighborhood.

Brown added: “St. John Street’s story resonates beyond Flint. It’s a universal tale of displacement, identity and the enduring spirit of those who refuse to let their history be erased.”
