Salvation Army Accepting Applications for Bell Ringers

The Salvation Army of Genesee County is in the process of hiring bell ringers for the upcoming 2018 Red Kettle Campaign that will begin November 9.

Applications will be taken Monday thru Friday from 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at the Beecher Corps located at 1475 W. Coldwater Rd., Flint, MI (810) 789-4003 and 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at the Flint Citadel Corps located at 211 W. Kearsley St. in downtown Flint, corner of Beach Street and Kearsley Street, (810) 232-2199.

The Salvation Army anticipates hiring about 100 workers from across the community. It’s not an easy job because of the outdoor environment in many locations. The jobs will pay $9.25 an hour, but there may be some bonuses for job performance.  There is a potential to earn up to $370 per week.

To apply for a bell ringer position, candidates must be at least 18-years-old and will be required to present a valid driver’s license or state ID, Social Security card and a schedule of availability.

“We operate around 70 kettles in the county and they’re open, in some cases, 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., a possible 10 hours a day, six days a week, so we’ve got thousands of hours of time. We also need volunteers as well, but we don’t currently have enough people ready to volunteer for all of our locations, so that’s where these positions become important,” said Major Randy Hellstrom.

The Salvation Army Red Kettle bell ringing season kicks off on Friday, Nov. 9 and continues through Dec. 24, 2018. Workers ring bells every day except Sundays and on Thanksgiving Day.

“A lot of the people we hire, just need some job history and basic job skills, so we give them an opportunity to work on those skills and to gain employment that could help to provide a better future for themselves and their families. They have an opportunity to market themselves and find possible employment following the holidays,” Hellstrom added.

The total application time takes approximately 60 minutes.  For more information, call The Salvation Army location closest to you.
