Ruth Mott Foundation Renews Funding for Y Safe Places
Flint, MI – The YMCA of Greater Flint is pleased to announce the Ruth Mott Foundation is continuing their support of Y Safe Places with a $125,720 grant. Y Safe Places is an offsite summer and after school program offered by the YMCA of Greater Flint. This is the second year, the Ruth Mott Foundation has funded the program. “Studies show over 15 million children do not have adequate or appropriate supervision after school,” said YMCA Program Director Shelly MacArthur. “Children in our community need a safe place to come and do homework, get a healthy meal, and hang out. The Ruth Mott Foundation’s continued partnership offers tremendous support to this program and allows these kids to be just that kids.”
Currently, over 200 students use the Y Safe Places Facilities. “For the past few years, the Ruth Mott Foundation has enjoyed a strong partnership with the YMCA that allows us to work together to serve hundreds of youth in Flint and Genesee County,” said Sylvester Jones, Program Officer at the Ruth Mott Foundation.
The two sites, Second Chance Church located at 1950 Burr Blvd and the COFY Center located at 1015 Carpenter Rd, offer free programing for all youth 1st-8th grades. These sites are open Monday – Friday from 4:00 – 7:00 pm and Saturday from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm. Students enjoy daily activities focused on individual growth, teamwork, healthy lifestyles and fun in a safe environment. Activities include field trips, service learning, and weekly trips to swim at the Y. Academic assistance is also available. Snack and dinner are also provided daily.
