Ruth Mott Foundation renews funding for Y Safe Places

Flint, MI – The YMCA of Greater Flint is pleased to announce the Ruth Mott Foundation is continuing its support of Y Safe Places with a grant for $100,000. Y Safe Places is an offsite summer and after-school program offered by the YMCA of Greater Flint. This is the tenth year the Ruth Mott Foundation has funded the program.

“According to the Afterschool Alliance, for every child in an afterschool program, four are waiting for an available program,” said YMCA Safe Places Director Monica Holmes.

“These sites offer families a safe place for their children to go after school to get homework help, a nice meal and snack, and of course have fun. Safe sites like these are important to stop the chain of violence in our community.”

Currently, over 190 students use the Y Safe Places Facilities. The two afterschool sites at Flint Development Center and River Park Apartments offer free programming for all youth in Kindergarten -12th grades. These sites are open Monday – Friday from 4 – 7 p.m. Students enjoy daily activities focused on individual growth, teamwork, healthy lifestyles and fun in a safe environment. Activities include field trips, service learning and trips to swim at the Y. Academic assistance is also available. Snacks and dinner are also provided daily.

Registrations are accepted at the site locations or at the Downtown YMCA. Call Safe Places Director Monica Holmes at 810.232.9622 with questions.
