MLK youth essay contest taking submissions

(FLINT, Mich., Nov. 25, 2024) — Equity, Justice and Voting Rights is the theme of the 2025 MLK Jr. Essay Contest for Genesee County students in 6th-12th grades. The deadline is Nov. 27, 2024.

The first-place winner will read their essay at the 46th Annual MLK Jr. Tribute event on Thursday, January 16, 2025, at 6 p.m. at the Genesys Banquet and Conference Center.

Additionally, winners will receive:

1st Place: $500 Gift Card
2nd Place: $250 Gift Card
3rd Place: $150 Gift Card

Essays must be at least 250 words typed in Times New Roman, font size 12, and double-spaced on numbered, single-sided pages. Essayists are encouraged to focus on how equity and justice relate to voting rights. Essays should discuss the history of voting struggles, especially for marginalized communities, and how unfair practices have affected people’s ability to vote. Students should address how working together can help ensure everyone has a fair chance to participate in elections and share their thoughts on how to promote equity and justice in voting today.
