Michigan State Trooper tragically dies at Hurley Medical Center after conducting a traffic stop

A Michigan State Police Trooper Joel Popp died after being struck as he was helping to conduct a traffic stop Wednesday, Jan. 24.

39-year-old Popp and other troopers were investigating a suspected impaired driver who was stopped on northbound Interstate 75 in a curved lane of travel at 7:12 p.m. on Wednesday. They were near Birch Run at the time.

A male driver, who was 81 years old ,struck two patrol cars along with Popp. Popp was outside of  his patrol vehicle. He was taken to Hurley Medical Center in Flint, where he tragically died.

The 81-year-old  driver had serious injuries. However, he is expected to survive.

The Flint Police Department, led by Chief Terence Green, recently extended its deepest condolences to the Michigan State Police, family and loved ones of a dedicated servant who recently passed away. The agency understands the immense pain and sorrow that comes with losing a fellow law-enforcement officer, and they want to assure the State Police and family that we stand with them in solidarity during this difficult time.

The Flint Police Department issued this statement: Losing a member of our law enforcement community is a tragic event that affects us all. We recognize the sacrifices made by those who serve and protect our community, and we are committed to supporting one another through these challenging moments. The Flint Police Department is ready to assist the Michigan State Police in any way possible, providing the necessary resources and support during their time of grief.

Chief Terence Green expressed his heartfelt condolences, stating, “We share in the pain and loss experienced by the family of Trooper Joel Popp.  Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this incredibly difficult time. The Flint Police Department is here to offer our unwavering support and assistance.”

Trooper Popp enlisted with the MSP in January of 2020, graduating as a member of the 137th Trooper Recruit School. He served at the Tri-City Post.
