FLINT, [6/5/23] – Flint residents can participate in a free Fire Safety Program, thanks to a collaboration by Flint Mayor Sheldon Neeley, Second Ward City Councilmember Ladel Lewis, the City of Flint Fire Department, the American Red Cross and Community Education Advocate Candice Mushatt. These partners are coming together to provide comprehensive fire safety classes, aiming to educate and empower the Flint community to prioritize fire safety, prevention and preparedness.
“Through the power of partnerships, we can empower Flint residents with the knowledge, tools, and resources needed to prevent fires and protect their families,” Neeley said. “Fire safety is a shared responsibility, and together we can make Flint a safer place.”
The first Fire Safety Program class will take place from 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., Saturday, June 10, at Greater Holy Temple, 6702 N. Dort Hwy. in Flint. Locations are forthcoming for additional classes on June 17, Juneteenth (June 19) and June 24. Classes will run from 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. at various centers around the community.
These engaging and informative classes will cover crucial topics such as fire safety awareness and prevention, home fire escape planning, and hands only cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training.
The fire safety portion of the program will be taught by the highly skilled and dedicated members of the Flint Fire Department. Participants will benefit from their expertise and experience in fire safety and prevention.
To enhance the fire safety preparedness of participants, each resident attending the program will receive three free smoke detectors and a fire extinguisher. These valuable resources, provided by the American Red Cross and Flint Fire Department, will support households in safeguarding their homes and loved ones from fire-related hazards.
Councilmember Lewis emphasized the importance of collaboration in ensuring the success of the Fire Safety Program. “Through this partnership, we are working hand in hand to address fire safety concerns in our community,” Lewis said. “By providing these informative sessions and essential resources, we are promoting a safer and more resilient Flint.”
The Fire Safety Program aims to create a safer environment by equipping Flint residents with the knowledge and tools necessary to prevent and respond to fires effectively.
