Martha Merkley Trust Provides Funding Programs at Local Y

The Martha Merkley Charitable Trust administered by FirstMerit PrivateBank has provided the YMCA of Greater Flint with a $5,000 grant for Youth and Elder programming at the Y. Youth and seniors comprise a large part of membership at the Pierson Road and Downtown Branches. Both branches have special programming including group fitness classes and sports designed to keep these vulnerable populations active in healthy lifestyles.

“The Y is key for both our seniors and our youth. We see them every day enjoying coffee at our smoothie bar, playing ball in the gym, and swimming in our pools. We give seniors a reason to stay active and a place to socialize. Our youth programs develop character like honesty and respect,” said YMCA Healthy Living Director Ashley Schlager. “We are excited to be expanding programs for these two groups in the community with the help of the Martha Merkley Charitable Trust.”

There are a variety of programs, classes, and activities designed specifically for seniors and youth at the YMCA of Greater Flint. Additionally, individuals in need can apply for Partner with Youth funding to subsidize a portion of activities costs. For more information about senior and youth activities as well as Partner with Youth please call the Downtown YMCA at 810.232.9622, Pierson Road at 810.732.9622 or visit flintymca.org.
