Tammara Owens, CEO, owner and founder of Mamie’s Protein Smoothie Queens LLC, has put a lot of her own money into her business and worked hard. Now, she is seeing the doors of opportunity open for her.

Owens has an opportunity to be on the “Shark Tank.”

“I’ve prepared for this since 2016,” Owens said. “Right now, I’ve got the Shark Tank Group. They’re my mentors. I’m dealing with certain Sharks. The certificates that I have gained under the SHARK TANK group has made me learn the importance of having a business and being a business owner. The courses that I have taken from the Shark Tank Group have helped me, along with  the free courses from the SBDC.”

The courses taught Owens how to pitch investors, along with other skills. She said the courses were helpful, and available to everyone. She hopes to pitch more investors in her own community, get more loans, take more courses, etc.

Owens has also submitted her Shark Tank application.

“I just hope I’ll be ready for it,” she said.

Owens’ had the idea for her business in 2015. She now sells organic, vegan protein powder, healthy juices and smoothies made with organic, vegan fruit.

Tammara Owens, CEO, owner and founder of Mamie’s Protein Smoothie Queens LLC is preparing to have a food truck this coming summer.

She has named the business after her grandmother, who greatly inspired her.

“Mamie is my grandmother’s name,” Owens pointed out. “As I was growing up, I played basketball and I made sure I always ate healthy. My grandma made sure we ate healthy as well.”

Owens’ grandmother would make fresh juice.

“I would look and ask: ‘Grandma, why are you drinking celery juice and water?’ She never took medicine. She never took one medication, and she looks like she’s about 40 or 50 because she always juiced her fruits and vegetables.”

Owens’ grandmother is now in her 80s.

In 2015, Owens received her DBA. In 2017, she slowly started preparing soul food dinners and other healthy dinners, which she sold at General Motors. At the time, Owens was working at the General Motors CCA Davison Road Parts Processing Center.

Lately, the Shark Tank Group are not the only ones interested in Owens’ products.

Owens received Courageous Woman Magazine’s BAAE Award for the best product of the year. She was also nominated for the BAAE Awards Entrepreneur of the Year. Courageous Woman Magazine is an inspirational publication that highlights extraordinary women in business and entertainment and is based in Temecula, California.

Owens’ friend worked for the City of Flint, and her friend tasted a smoothie.

“She started inviting me to all these groups with all these investors and other programs in the city of Flint,” Owens explained. “So, I started going to breakfast clubs at Berston.”

Owens was communicating with Samantha Fountain, acting economic development director for the City of Flint. She also contacted Tracy McDade from the Flint & Genesee Group (formerly the Flint & Genesee Chamber).

Owens is grateful to those who have been supportive of her business goals and thankful to God for her vision and for putting divine connections in her life.

“Huntington gave me my first loan to get me started.  Bobbie, the vice president at Huntington also believed in me. My Trademark attorney is Mrs Kyona McGhee from TradeMark My Stuff! Ms. Patty Williams, owner of New Beginnings Fitness Center and Mr. Bernard Drew at Liberty Management believed in me, too.”

Owens is also currently looking for people who can help her grow her business. and says she realizes nobody can do it all by themselves.

Willing to help the next person as she has been helped, she suggests others who would like to have a business work on having good credit.

Owens elaborated on why she thinks she is getting opportunities in regards to her business, saying she’s always been a driven person, willing to get what she wants and more and she realizes no will “just give it to you.”

“I just trust in God. I put in the application for “Shark Tank” two years ago, and I got nervous and I backed out. They emailed me and said: “You’ve got a nice product. Don’t give up!”
