Local delinquent tax foreclosures not to occur until next year

Genesee County Treasurer Deb Cherry’s office has been receiving multiple inquiries from residents about their outstanding delinquent taxes. Treasurer Cherry would like to remind Genesee County residents that delinquent tax foreclosures will not happen until March of next year.

On April 24, 2020, Circuit Court Judge Pickell issued a court order stating that delinquent tax foreclosures will not occur until March 31, 2021.  Treasurer Deb Cherry requested the order based on the hardship so many people are facing due to COVID 19.

“It is important that our first priority is that Genesee County citizens stay safe and healthy”, Cherry said. “Many people are facing financial hardship and I don’t think we need to give people something else to worry about.  It’s important they know their home is safe.”

Even though foreclosures will not occur this year, taxes can still be paid.

“If it is at all possible, please make payments on your taxes, even if it is a partial payment,” Cherry said. “The tax bills will continue to grow.  So, it is important to pay the taxes before the balances become too high”.

Even though the County Office building is closed to the public, payments can be made online or by mail.  To make a payment online, go to www.geneseecountytreasurer.com and click the online link within the paragraph about payments.  If paying by mail, the check should be made payable to the Genesee County Treasurer and mailed to the Genesee County Treasurer, 1101 Beach St., Flint, MI 48502.  Please include the parcel number or address with all correspondence.

The Genesee County Treasurer’s office is currently working to develop policies and procedures to handle taxpayers once the County Administration building opens to the public.  Please be patient with the staff during this time as things will be different for everyone.
