Live virtual series allows fans an inside look at two-time Olympian Claressa Shields

Written by Tanya Terry

Flint native and boxing legend Claressa Shields launched a 3-part speaker series with live storytelling platform, REVEL Moments, earlier this month, ahead of the Undisputed Women’s World Middleweight Championship.

During this unique experience, fans can interact with Shields live on the REVEL Moments platform and will have a chance to talk directly with her, as well as ask questions. It all happens virtually!

“I wanted to be a singer and be a mom, strangely,” Shields revealed during the previous REVEL Moment experience.

When asked what type of singing she did, Shields answered Aaliyah was her favorite.

“I love Beyonce’ to this day,” Shields added. “I used to call myself the Beyonce’ of boxing. I called myself Beyonce’ at the beginning. But, now I just stick with GWOAT and T-Rex.”

Shields also explained why she puts the “w” in GWOAT, her nickname.

“It’s not that I feel men are better than women,” she said. It’s just because I feel like Muhammad Ali will always be the greatest.”

She explained Ali will always have the number one spot in her heart.

“So, I’ll just keep the W. I’ll call myself the GWOAT: Greatest Woman of All Time, and people can address me as that. I don’t think I’m ever going to change it to GOAT because Muhammad Ali is the GOAT.”

The multi-episode, live experience series titled “The GWOAT” is being produced by REVEL Moments. The series explores Shield’s experiences leading up to Shields’ fight against Savanna Marshall September 10 at the O2 Arena in London.

Shields, the WBC, WBA, IBF middleweight champion, said she has changed a lot since her first fight with Marshall in 2012. She expressed excitement about the opportunity to let her fans to get to know her as the woman she is today.

“I just know that I’ve always looked forward to the future, and I’m the reason why we’re fighting at the 02 Arena and going to be fighting in front of millions of people-and then we’re going to be fighting in front of 20,000 people-because whoever they said was the best-I took on every challenge and came out on top. So, I look forward to the fight with her 100%.”

REVEL Moments is a new, live, virtual storytelling platform where athletes share stories, relive moments, and engage with their biggest fans.

REVEL Moments, created by Dean Brody and Ankur Mathur, was inspired by research conducted with an NBA franchise during the COVID-19 pandemic seeking new ways to connect athletes and fans. What resulted is a platform that allows athletes to share and relive their greatest moments and provide a glimpse into their lives outside the ring with fans.

REVEL Moments is working with several athletes across the NBA, MLB, NFL, and WNBA, among others to produce their own live series. Claressa Shields is the first Olympian and Women’s Boxer.

“Claressa is one of the greatest athletes of our time – as a Flint native it is important to champion our own champions whenever we can,” said Brody, co-founder of REVEL Moments.

“We are proud to showcase Claressa, the human first, on our platform,” Brody added.
