$500,000 in Federal Funding Will Support Development of Community Revitalization Plan
FLINT—Congressman Dan Kildee today announced new federal funding for the Flint Housing Commission to help revitalize struggling Flint neighborhoods.
The $500,000 federal grant, awarded to the Flint Housing Commission through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Choice Neighborhoods Initiative (CNI) Program, will support the development of a comprehensive neighborhood revitalization plan. This locally created plan will focus on redeveloping distressed public housing and improving services for the surrounding neighborhood, including economic, education and transportation services.
“I’m proud to support the Flint Housing Commission and its important work building stronger neighborhoods and improving our community,” Kildee said. “In Congress, I will continue working to bring federal resources back to mid-Michigan.”
“Thanks to the invaluable assistance of Congressman Dan Kildee, the foresight of the residents and the Board of Commissioners for the Flint Housing Commission, the Flint Housing Commission and the city of Flint are partnering to address the distressed public housing development known as River Park and the neighboring community,” Harold S. Ince, Jr., Executive Director, Flint Housing Commission, said.
“River Park has been part of the Flint community since 1968,” Ince added. “Unfortunately, the neighborhood immediately surrounding River Park has become a food, education and economic desert. Flint’s declining population has resulted in increased blight, large tracts of vacant land and increased crime in the area. With this funding, the Flint Housing Commission will be able to design a solution to address the issues and help revitalize the community.”
In Congress, Kildee has worked to deliver federal resources to improve housing in Genesee County to make neighborhoods stronger. Kildee has secured $4.3 million in 2022 for the Genesee County Habitat for Humanity to make improvements to local homes. In December 2021, Congressman Kildee announced over $2.2 million in federal incentives to develop 153 new or improved low-income housing units in Flint.
